POLAND The Łódź Fabryczna railway station was opened on December 10th.
Around 300 designers worked on the PLN 1.75 bln mixed-use project, producing almost 13,000 drawings, while around 15,000 people supervised by app. 3,000 engineers from a variety of industries worked on the construction project. The station combines railway, bus, city and vehicle transport, while the railway track between Łódź Widzew and Łódź Fabryczna has also been upgraded, while the underground section has also been rebuilt as well as the road layout and the infrastructure around the station.
An integrated transport hub above and under ul. Węglowa has been constructed. Over 750,000 cubic metres of concrete was used for the construction, i.e. three times as much as at the construction of the National Stadium in Warsaw, and 70,000 tonnes of steel. Almost 2 mln cubic metres of soil had to be removed from the building site. The bottom slab of the new station has an area of almost 65,000 sqm, the size of three full-sized football pitches. A two-bay tunnel of 1.7 km has also been constructed for the four platforms.
The station now has three levels. The lowest of these, which is located 16.5m underground, includes the railway station with four platforms and eight tracks. The structure of the roof is made of steel frames filled with 10,000 triangular, partly see-through panels that allow natural light into the platform hall. Each platform includes two lifts, escalators and travelators. The higher level, 8m under the ground, comprises 18 cashiers, waiting rooms, commercial facilities and passageways.
A multi-bay bus station is located in the northern section of this level. The complex has been designed with improved disabled access, including three specially designed cashiers with a larger area and lower counters, lift buttons in Braille alphabet, guiding paths and indication tiles – and there are also such markings on the platform edges. The project also involved the construction of a car park.
The contractor was a consortium of Torpol (part of the Polimex-Mostostal group), Astaldi, Przedsiębiorstwo Usług Technicznych Intercor and Przedsiębiorstwo Budowy Dróg i Mostów. Construction work started in 2011 and cost PLN 1.75 bln.
