LED light produces 200 lumens per watt
WORLD The city of Dubai and Philips Lighting have launched the Dubai Lamp.

The LED light, which produces 200 lumens per watt, arose from a unique research partnership between Philips Lighting and the city of Dubai and comes in a wide range of shapes and colours.

By replacing conventional lighting with the Dubai Lamp, households and businesses can reduce electricity usage for lighting by up to 90 pct. The light is also extremely durable with an average lifespan of up to 15 times longer than a conventional bulb, claims Philips Lighting.

The bulbs come in four versions, with both cool daylight and warm white colours. These bulbs could replace 80 pct of conventional bulbs used in Dubai homes. The city of Dubai and Philips Lighting are to supply 2 mln Dubai Lamps for residential and business use across the city in 2017, which could increase to 10 mln bulbs by 2021. The Dubai Lamp Initiative aims to raise public awareness of the need to save energy and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The candle and bulb versions of the Dubai Lamp can easily be retrofitted into most sockets. Although 200 lumens per watt has been achieved before in laboratories (including a prototype TLED by Philips in 2013), the Dubai Lamp is believed to be the first such LED to come onto the market.
