A competition for the development of PKiN square

19 July 2017

POLAND The city of Warsaw has announced an international competition for a design concept for plac Centralny - the square in front of the Palace of Culture and Science.

Entrants are to design the part of plac Defilad between the main entrance to the Palace of Culture and ul. Marszałkowska. To the north of the future square will stand the Museum of Modern Art and the TR Warszawa theatre. The southern side, has also been set aside in the local development plan for cultural purposes. “We would like to remove the curse from this space, to give it back to the city and its residents. Varsovians’ opinions will be of critical importance in this matter. We will consult with them over the designs from the competition. I’m really curious about how architects will respond to this difficult challenge and what the opinion will be that we will elicit through the process of social consultation,” says Renata Kaznowska, a deputy mayor of Warsaw. “We are looking for a new identity for a place which is important to both Varsovians and visitors to Warsaw. We are looking for a vision showing how the place will operate, both at the weekend and on week days at different times of day and night throughout the year,” says Marlena Happach the head architect for the city of Warsaw. The submitted designs will be assessed by a panel of architects, experts and community representatives. The choice of the winner will be preceded consultations with the community. An exhibition of the designs is also to be organised, as well as workshops. The ninth Warsaw under Construction festival is also take place in the plac Defilad organised by the City of Warsaw, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Warsaw. “The slogan for the ninth festival will be ‘Plac Defilad. One step forward’. We will set ourselves down in the square and ask questions about its future, present analyses and historic materials and show the residents around the square,” says Joanna Mytkowska, the director of the Museum of Modern Art. This year the main exhibition of the festival will be about the history of the square and its transformation. Requests to enter the competition must be submitted by August 4th, 2017 and design entries must be submitted by 24th October, 2017, with the results to be announced at the beginning of November at the ninth Warsaw under Construction festival.
