Warsaw loses control of historic monuments

Eurobuild CEE 08 August 2017
POLAND In November the Provincial Governor of Masovia is to terminate an agreement signed in 2003 with the city of Warsaw, on the basis of which Warsaw’s historic conservation officer is responsible for Warsaw’s historic buildings.

The agreement was signed 14 year’s ago by Lech Kaczyński (who was at that time the mayor of Warsaw). Further rights were granted to the city by an annexe signed in 2005. From November 1st all responsibilities for historic buildings in the capital revert to the Provincial Historic Conservation Officer.

In an interview for Gazeta Wyborcza Jakub Lewicki, the provincial historic preservation officer, said that the termination of the agreement was the decision of the government and he was only meant to implement it. He also announced that he would make every effort to make the changeover professional and stated that additional governmental financing would be made available to his office. Employees of the historic preservation office in Warsaw are to be allowed to transfer to the provincial office ”on good conditions”. In Warsaw around 5,000 rulings per year as well as 1,000 resolutions and app. 2,000 recommendations – many more than in other parts of Masovia.
