Biedronka opens 31,000 sqm
Biedronka has opened its largest distribution centre
POLAND Grocery chain Biedronka has opened its 16th Polish distribution centre, which is also its largest in the country, on ul. Metalowców in Gorzów Wielkopolski.

The 31,000 sqm centre will be able to receive 8,000 pallets and a capacity to send out up to 240 lorries per day. The centre, which is to supply 200 stores in the Lubusz, Pomerania, ad Wielkopolska provinces, has a fleet of 60 delivery vehicles and 80 semi-trailers as well as a filling station and a car wash. The investment costs came to PLN 113 mln. The area devoted to fresh produce is proportionally 40 pct larger than in previous centres and also has special loading docks for frozen products. Suppliers can register deliveries themselves at an electronic reception point and there is a voice-based order completion system. The centre’s cooling system is based on carbon dioxide and the lighting system automatically adjusts itself to the brightness of the natural light. The centre uses Just In Time deliveries. “By using a number of innovative technologies and environmentally friendly solutions we will can increase the efficiency of our deliveries to stores and fulfil out CSR responsibilities,” says Jacek Kasprzak, the director of the distribution centre. Biedronka has 16 distribution centres with a combined warehouse area of 400,000 sqm.
