Neighbour-friendly Witomino

POLAND An architectural design created jointly by three studios: Dynamo Produce Marzena Wytrykusz, Hago Architekci Andrzej Gołębiewski and Jakub Piórkowski PB Studio has won a competition concerning the concept of a neighbour centre in Gdynia’s Witomino district.

23 studios from all over the country entered the competition. Ten of them fulfilled formal requirements and they qualified for the competition, the commission ultimately received eight works. “For the first time we do not convert an old building for the needs of the neighbour centre but we are building a new one. The task which designers had to face was not easy. The greatest challenge was the area but our requirements were also high,” comments Michał Guć, deputy mayor of Gdynia. “The winning concept flawlessly solves functional issues, connecting and dividing the indoor space and the outdoors area. They have created a flexible, capacious area which does not lack places facilitating integration in smaller groups,” says Bianka Witkowska from Laboratorium Innowacji Społecznych of Gdynia, who is the president of the competition. “We tried to design a place which would offer a friendly, homely atmosphere and could serve people of various ages. The area was a challenge because of its location and differences in height. The building creates a certain acoustic barrier but it maintains its open and welcoming character,” explains architect Adrian Mania from the winning team. Authors of the chosen design received a cheque for PLN 25,000 and they were also invited to negotiations concerning the preparation of the construction design and detailed design. The second prize (PLN 10,000) went to the Interurban Łukasz Piankowski studio and the third one (PLN 5,000) to the Pniewski Architekci studio. Concepts created by the 3MA and IFA Kamil Domachowski studios were also distinguished by being included in an exhibition of the best works of art. The development of the Neighbour Centre in Witomin-Radiostacja is one of the most important revitalization enterprises in Gdynia. The facility is being developed at the junction of ul. Rolnicza and ul. Chwarznieńska, near a planned route for pedestrian and vehicles include ul. Uczniowska, ul. Nauczycielska and ul. Widna. The centre will be a place for meetings and activities for the local community, it will include a library, a consultation and therapy centre as well as two rooms for physical exercises and workshops.
