POLAND Carrefour Polska has opened its Carrefour Pro concept store which introduces new omnichannel sales technology, such as scan & go and ordering goods online with the use of screens located in the store.
“We chose Warsaw for the debut of the new format because it is the largest market where clients are eager to use technological innovation. In Carrefour Pro we introduced a lot of them and we examine whether they will work in practice. The shop is a concept store – we are not planning to copy it on the 1:1 scale but the solutions which prove effective and win customers’ favour will also be introduced in other shops,” said Ronan Martin, operations director at Carrefour Polska. “The shop in Promenada is a summary of the work we carried out for a few years as well as technologies and innovations developed by us. It is an example of the implementation of omnichannel strategy and a direction which we want to follow on the Polish market. The first novelty is the opening of the shop to the mall. It does not have shop windows, the unit is not separated from the passageway by a row of cashiers.
Customers are welcomed by neon lights featuring names of the departments and a slightly industrial look. The innovative approach also includes the placement of the cashier line, which is located inside the shop (like it is the case in e.g. clothing shops). It is an innovation which was only introduced in one shop until now. The shop also includes self-service cashiers and scan & go points. The option makes it possible for customers who have an appropriate application to scan the QR code of products using their phones and pay for them in an appropriate point using one of possible payment variants e.g. card, cash or phone thanks to the Masterpass electronic wallet from Mastercard.
Apart from that the chain also arranged a restaurant area under the name of Wyspa Smaków (Flavour Island) which offers an option of ordering a hot meal or choosing the cook to go option which enables you to cook a meal from prepared products at home. The area has its own chef. Furthermore, the company focused on the health food offer, own cured meat products, vegetables and fruit. Carrefour occupied 2,000 sqm but is not planning to introduce the hypermarket format on this area. Because of this some products are not available on the shelf but they can be ordered using one of 19 screens presenting the offer of the Carrefour.pl and ECarrefour.pl shops. In order to do this the customer has to have the Mój Carrefour application. Orders can be collected in the shop, in a coolomat located within the shopping centre (a self-service parcel pick-up station which is suitable for the storage of groceries) or order a home delivery. By 4:00 p.m. the delivery takes place on the same day. It is free of charge starting from the shopping worth PLN 120. “The solution used in the new hypermarket is the first implementation of m-commerce solutions in the shop of our chain. All the customer is needs is a phone with the installed application in order to be able to order a product which they did not find in the shop. There is also the same-day-delivery option within the city limits. Thanks to this we can react to our customers’ needs practically in real time,” explains Ronan Martin. The shop includes eco-friendly solutions which include the cooling system based on carbon dioxide, refrigerated display cases that can be closed (which could save up to 40 pct of energy) as well as LED lighting. The chain is currently testing the-called smart trolleys which it might introduce to the new shops of the chain. Their functionality will involve scanning the codes of the products put in and creating a shopping basket which the customer will be able to pay online. The solutions proposed by Carrefour were created on the basis of cooperation with start-ups as part of the C4 Retail Lab technological incubator which was created and supported by the company.
