Intercity rail tunnel for Łódź

Eurobuild CEE 05 January 2018

POLAND At the end of last year PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe signed an agreement for the construction of an rail tunnel to connect Łódź Fabryczna station with the Łódź Kaliska and Łódź Żabieniec stations.

The PLN 1.59 bln gross project will be implemented by a consortium comprising Energopol Szczecin and Przedsiębiorstwo Budowy Dróg i Mostów. Work on the project is to start in autumn 2018 and should be completed in December 2021.

The tunnel is the latest stage in a wider project aimed at streamlining the rail system in Łódź. The first stage was the construction of a tunnel between the Łódź Widzew and Łódź Fabryczna stations and the redeveloped Łódź Fabryczna station. The latest project will turn Łódź Fabryczna from a terminus into an intermediary station, shortening the journey time across the city and allowing both regional and long distance trains to travel through the city centre.

The wider project includes the construction of two new stations in the tunnel, underneath the junction of ul. Zielona, ul. Zachodnia and al. Kościuszki and the junction of ul. Ogrodowa and ul. Karskiego. The stations should provide locals with a convenient connection to the city centre making the daily commute to work and schools easier, while also increasing the attractiveness of Łódź for tourists.
