Białystok on museum map

Eurobuild CEE 11 January 2018

POLAND The city council of Białystok has announced a tender to find a general contractor to build the shell of the Siberian Memorial Museum in a former military complex on ul. Węglowa.

The museum is to be opened in 2020. An existing warehouse with app. 3,100 sqm of space is to be converted into an exhibition space. The museum will have almost 2,400 sqm of administrative space and will also have a reconstructed railway siding. The contractor is also to be responsible for the surrounding area and building parking facilities. This stage of the project should be completed by the end of 2019. “The project is particularly important to us,” says Tadeusz Truskolaski, the mayor of Białystok. “We would like it to be a museum of importance throughout all of Poland,” he adds. Demolition work on the site and preparation work has already been completed at a cost of PLN 2.4 mln. The museum has recently been granted an EU-subsidy of PLN 6.8 mln to build the exhibition hall and for the purchase of equipment. The mission of the Museum of Siberian Memorial is to document and commemorate the lives of those who lived in the part of Poland that was once ruled by Russia from the 17th century to contemporary times. The museum is to preserve the memory of Siberia as a symbol of the repression of the Tsars and of Stalin, and to be a cultural and economic research centre. Currently the museum operates in temporary headquarters.
