Post–glacial education on the Vistula

Post–glacial education on the Vistula
The design of the educational pavilion is to resemble the glacial erratics found along the Vistula
POLAND An educational centre building inspired by the texture and shape of post-glacial stones is to be constructed in Golędzinów in Warsaw’s Praga-Północ district by the end of October 2018.

It is to be built as part of the Life+ ecological project and will comprise a lecture and exhibition hall. Workshops, lectures and lessons will be held in the building to provide local residents with information about the Vistula’s ecosystem. The project was inspired by the many glacial erratics that can be found in the neighbourhood, which is why the two-storey building will be designed to resemble a hollow post-glacial stone. The concrete on the pavilion should eventually be covered with moss and almost merge with its surroundings. An outdoor recreational area will also be created for field activities.

“The unusual shape of the building is its unquestionable advantage. Thanks to this it will not only be unmistakable, but could also come to symbolise the area along the Vistula. However, the project also involves a number of challenges, which is why the selection of a contractor was not easy,” says Marek Piwowarski, the director of Warsaw’s greenery management department.

The building has been designed by Kraków architectural studio eM4 Pracownia Architektury Brataniec, which won the competition for the concept of the pavilion. The project is to be constructed by another Kraków-based firm, Transtolbud-Piekutowski, which will receive PLN 5 mln for the work.
