A million metres for Mercedes
Strabag is the leader of the consortium building the plant in Jawor
POLAND Work has begun on the construction of a Mercedes-Benz engine factory, the first plant of its type outside Germany, in Jawor in Lower Silesia.
The project, which is being carried out by a consortium led by Strabag, will take twelve months, with the net value of the work amounting to almost PLN 255 mln. The factory is to be built on ul. Cukrownicza in Jawor, within the Lower Silesian Economic Activity Zone – S3 Jawor. It will produce four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines for Mercedes-Benz cars.

Strabag as the leader of the consortium has a 70 pct stake in the consortium, which also includes TKT Engineering and Elektromontaż-Poznań. A production hall is to be built with and an adjacent office building. The total usable area of the buildings will come to app. 98,000 sqm (including the 96,000 sqm main hall) and they will have a cubic volume of almost 1 mln cubic metres. The general contractor will also carry out installation work, including for the sprinkler, hydrant and gas extinguishing systems as well as the mechanical and electrical installations.

“Projects such as this one, for the Daimler group, need a well-developed network of motorways and expressways, and Strabag is involved in the implementation of the largest road projects in Poland. One of these is the S3 expressway, which played a significant role in choosing the location for the Mercedes factory,” comments Strabag board member Alfred Watzl.
