How large-scale projects change cities

Eurobuild CEE 13 February 2018

POLAND Urban Land Institute is organising the first Places + Spaces event, a series of meetings during which developers, architects and urban planners are to discuss the impact of new projects on urban areas both in Poland and abroad. The first event is to be devoted to big mixed-use projects and is to be held in Warsaw on February 20th.

“We are going to present examples from around the globe of large, landmark projects such as the Guggenheim Museum and Millennium Park. We will discuss the effect of creative placemaking on urban environments and on how cities are perceived by its inhabitants and by tourists. I am convinced that participants will appreciate the expertise of our speakers and the casual, stimulating format of the meetings,” said John Banka, the chairman of the Urban Land Institute Poland.

The speakers are to include Alfonso Martinez Cearra, managing director of Bilbao Metropoli-30, which has been involved in the regeneration of Bilbao for the last 25 years, Daniel Ringelstein, director of city design at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, an architectural studio whose projects include the famous Millennium Park in Chicago. One of the five planned meetings is to be attended by Marlena Happach, the chief architect of the city of Warsaw as well as by representatives of Echo Investment and Okam Capital. The panel is to be moderated by Andrew Tuck, the chief editor and founder of Monocle Magazine.

“I would like to invite all Polish real estate market professionals to come to the Places + Spaces meetings and to become a member of the Urban Land Institute. Over the next four debates in 2018, we will discuss topics such as large city centres and the role of public spaces in private projects,” added John Banka. The Mayor of Warsaw is the honorary patron of the event.
