Eco-tower for twice the price
W350 is a wooden skyscraper, due to be completed in 2041
WORLD The ‘green building’ concept has been reinvented by Japanese company Sumitomo Forestry, which has announced plans to build the world’s tallest wooden building – a 350m tower with office space, a hotel, retail/services and a residential section.
The building, which has been given the working name of W350, will have 70 floors. It has been scheduled for completion in 2041, on the 350th anniversary of the founding of the company, a major player in the wood industry.

The project is intended to promote sustainable, environmentally-friendly construction and wood as a construction material (about two-thirds of Japan is covered by forests). Only around 10 pct of the structure will be made of steel, while 180,000 cubic metres of local wood will be used to build the rest. The total area of the building will amount to 0.5 mln sqm. It will include 8,000 apartments and so will conform to the most rigorous seismic resistance standards.

Investment costs for the project are estimated at USD 8 bln – a similar tower made of glass and steel would be half as expensive. The design of the building is the work of the Nikken Sekkei studio. The location of W350 has not yet been disclosed, but it can be assumed – due to the company being based in Tokyo – that the skyscraper will be situated in the Japanese capital.
