POLAND Henning Larsen, an architectural studio from Copenhagen, is the winner of an international competition for a development concept for the 16 ha site of the Imperial Shipyard, organised by investor Edonia.

The studio collaborated with BBGK Architekci of Warsaw and A2P2 Architekci of Gdańsk. The competition was announced in May 2017. The second and third place went to MVRDV (the Netherlands) and Paola Vigano (Italy) respectively. "The Henning Larsen team analysed the site very carefully, both on an urban scale and in detail," says Gerard Schuurman, the project director. Edonia is a joint venture company of Belgian developers Revive and Alides and since the spring it has owned the Imperial Shipyard in the area of Młode Miasto project in Gdańsk. Henning Larsen is an architectural studio that specialises in sustainable urban projects that foster local communities and include large public spaces. The Henning Larsen design was developed in collaboration with BBGK Architekci from Warsaw and A2P2 Architects from Gdańsk and was additionally approved by the project’s quality committee, which was an advisory body composed of city planners and architects as well as representatives of the local community. The competition jury itself was appointed by the investor. “It was not an easy decision because the final designs were of a very high standard. Each of them represented a slightly different design approach and each of the designs had its own strengths. Un the end, we gave our recommendation to the one that offered the most vibrant and diverse urban environment,” says Piotr Lorens, president of the Society of Polish Town Planners, and chairman of the quality committee. Around 3,500 apartments are to be developed as part of the proposed project, as well as office spaces, retail space, recreation areas, hotels and cultural centres.

“The variety of buildings combined with a well-balanced mix of uses will give the district character and also contribute to the leasing process,” says Maximilian Mendel from Reas, who sat on the quality committee. The winning design is for a meeting place that includes a food market, a museum of contemporary art as well as a coastal promenade. “We were impressed by Henning Larsen taking on the view of the user, optimising the views of the river and proposing a network of public spaces that add to the character of the place,” says Paweł Mrozek of the Gdańsk Conurbation Development Forum, who sat on the quality committee. “It was important for us to preserve the unique historic character of the Imperial Shipyard while integrating it again with the centre of Gdańsk. For us, urban regeneration is about creating long-term value for a given area – ecologically, socially and financially. We are happy to present the new area of the Imperial Shipyard,” says Jacob Kurek, a partner of Henning Larsen.

The revitalization of the Imperial Shipyard is a project covering an area of 16-ha in the centre of the Młode Miasto district in Gdańsk.
