EUR 135 mln for Galeria Wilanów
Local residents are demanding a smaller mall
POLAND Lone Star, the majority shareholder of developer Globe Trade Centre (GTC) has demanded from the Ministry of Investment and Development compensation for the decision of the Warsaw city authorities to block the construction of the Galeria Wilanów shopping centre.

Lone Star is demanding EUR 135 mln in damages. “the Ministry of Investment and Development has no knowledge whether the other party will decide on arbitration after receiving our response to their notification of a legal dispute,” ministry officials informed ‘Eurobuild CEE’. ‘Parkiet’ was the first newspaper to write about the story.

GTC was planning to develop Galeria Wilanów on ul. Branickiego in Warsaw's Wilanów district. The design is by APA Wojciechowski and Moshe Tzur. The mall was to have a gla of 61,000 sqm with around 250 retail units and 2,200 parking spaces in an underground car park as well as on the roof. Pre-lease agreements had been signed by such tenants as Carrefour, H&M, Cinema City and the LPP group. A number of local residents objected to the project, demanding changes to the design with the mall to be broken up into many smaller buildings. GTC would not agree and the mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, refused to issue a building permit. However, the Supreme Administrative Court has now overruled the local authorities granting the project the necessary environmental permission although a building permit has still not been granted.
