POLAND The Port of Gdańsk Authority has announced a tender to find a contractor to build the Northern Quay, one of the largest projects to be developed by the Port of Gdańsk Authority.

All the necessary documentation to commence construction work has already been acquired. “Once extended, the Northern Quay is to primarily be used for ro-ro transhipments. We’ve seen this sector grow quickly especially for the handling of commercial vehicles. We finished 2017 with a rise of 400 pct on 2016,” says Łukasz Greinke, the CEO of the Port of Gdańsk Authority. The contractor will be responsible for the construction of a section of moorings and securing the sea bed, as well as part of the a section of the wharf including infrastructure such as ro-ro ramps and a loading section. The contractor will also be responsible for demolition work and applying for an occupancy permit. The project is to receive funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility. “The project is 20-pct co-financed from the EU,” says Jowita Zielinkiewicz, the director of the Department of Innovation and Fundraising at the Port of Gdańsk Authority and the total value of the EU subsidy comes to EUR 20 mln. The total cost of the project is estimated at PLN 400 mln (app. EUR 93 mln). The deadline for those wishing to bid on the contract is the end of July. Construction work will begin this year and should be completed by 2020.
