The chair that’s not there
Students of the Estonian Academy of Arts have designed a set of impossible chairs
EUROPE Students of the Estonian Academy of Arts have designed a set of impossible chairs. The challenge was to build a chair with the absolute minimum of materials.

Every year during the annual workshops students test out their designs and come crashing down on the floor and the painful experience provides useful feedback in refining the designs.

The work was supervised by Ilkka Suppanen and the student designers were Markus Maasing, Sume Elisabeth Värv, Ra Martin Puhkan, Mia Martina Peil, Mari Poom, Katariina Mustasaar, Anna Riin Velner, Kertu Johanna Jõeste, Siim Tanel Tõnisson, Margaretha Aus, Mark Aleksander Fischer, Pamela Kristin Kajakas, Patrick Barbo, Karmen Eller, Semele Kari, Päär Keedus, Evelin Kruus, Karolin Kull, Eeros Lees, Monica Mustjõgi, Kadi Pihlak, Kelli Puusepp, Marlene Kirt, Kadri Kallaste.

llkka Suppanen is one of the world’s best known contemporary Finnish designers. His clients include Iittala, Marimekko, Artek, Nokia, Saab, Axis, Cappellini and Lucente. His work has been exhibited at MoMa in New York, Milan Furniture Fair and Venice Architecture Biennale. He has also received many international awards, including the Swedish Bruno Mathsson Prize and the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize in 2015.
