Amazon develops stores of the future on the Go
The first three stores opened in Seattle

WORLD US-based e-commerce giant Amazon has introduced its Amazon Go store concept. The stores are self-service and fully automated with customers using a smartphone app to make purchases.

At present, three such stores have been opened but Amazon plans to open 3,000 of them over the next few years. The small shops sell ready-made meals and fast moving consumer goods. The first three stores opened in Seattle. Now Amazon intends to take its concept to cities such as Chicago, San Francisco and New York. However, according to Bloomberg sources, up to 3,000 Amazon Go self-service stores will be opened by 2021. Morgan Stanley estimates that the Amazon will have to spend up to USD 3 bln to do this. On entering what looks like a traditional brick and mortar store, you register who you are by allowing your mobile phone to be scanned at the door. Cameras see what goods you take from the shelves and you walk out. Your purchases are automatically charged to the credit card you have registered with the app. Amazon spent a year testing out the first Go store on the ground floor of its headquarters on its employees before rolling it out to the public.
