Polish-Italian job for Kraków concert hall

Opr./edited TC 05 December 2018
Polish-Italian job for Kraków concert hall
Centrum Muzyki will be located along the Vistula embankment
POLAND The design has been approved for the Centrum Muzyki concert hall complex in Kraków. The jury, chaired by Ewa Kuryłowicz, chose the proposal prepared by a Polish-Italian team comprising SBS Engineering Group of Krakow and 3TI Progetti Italia – Ingegneria Integrata of Rome, whose entry beat off rival bids from around the world.

A prize of PLN 150,000 was awarded for the winning design as well as an invitation to the designers to take part in the preparation of the design documentation.

Several concert theatres (the largest with seating for 1,400 people) are to be built as well as rehearsal rooms, workshop rooms and a new park. The concert hall is to be built on the Bulwar Kurlandzki embankment. It must also blend in well with its surroundings, which will include the Academy of Music [Akademia Muzyczna] complex that is also planned nearby. New recreational areas for local residents and tourists will also be created along the Vistula embankment as part of the scheme. The project, which should be completed by the end of 2024, will also feature energy-saving systems.

“The idea for building such a centre originated in 2011. It will not only be the home of the Kraków Philharmonic, but will also house the concert halls of Sinfonietta Cracovia and Capella Cracoviensis. I hope that this building will not only be inspiring for the artists who will perform in it, but that it will also encourage the general public to involve themselves in the field of music,” declared Andrzej Kulig, the city’s deputy mayor for social and community policy.

The total area of Centrum Muzyki will come to around 28,000 sqm. Investment costs for the project will come to app. PLN 265 mln. The design documentation should be completed by the end of 2020, with the construction work expected to be carried out in 2021–2023. The grand opening has been scheduled for 2024.
