Poland leads in reducing real estate CO2 emissions

19 December 2018

EUROPE According to figures from the European Commission, 36 pct of carbon dioxide emissions in Europe result from the use of real estate, with buildings also accounting for 40 pct European energy consumption.

“This state of affairs is to change. Under the EU directive regulating the energy consumption of new buildings, from December 31st 2020 all new buildings in the EU are to have almost zero energy consumption,” states Andrzej Gutowski, the green building certification director at Colliers International. Poland is currently the region’s leader in the number of buildings with ecological certification with around 62 pct of the country’s modern office space already certified. According to data from the Polish Green Building Council (PLGBC), Poland accounts for 48 pct of the certified space across the CEE (including certification under BREEAM, LEED, DGNB, HQE and Well).
