Silesian Uni faculty up for Mies Award
The project has been recognised for complementing Katowice's traditional architectural style

POLAND The new radio and television faculty of the University of Silesia in Katowice has been added to the short-list of buildings nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 for architecture – the only Polish project to reach this stage.

Eighteen Polish projects qualified for the first stage of the competition, along with almost 400 buildings nominated from across Europe. The jury has now narrowed this down to 40 buildings, including the Katowice faculty, along with seven in France, six in Spain, four in Belgium, three each in Austria and Denmark, two apiece in Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and Romania as well as one each in Albania, Estonia, Finland, Portugal, Serbia and Slovakia.

The new faculty of radio and television of the University of Silesia, which was designed by the BAAS Arquitectura, Grupa 5 Architekci and Małeccy Biuro Projektowe studios, opened in October 2017 on the occasion of the university’s 50th birthday. It contains a two-storey cinema, a projection and film room and professional TV studios. The project has been recognised for complementing the traditional and specific architectural style of Katowice city centre, while also being a comfortable, functional learning space for students.

The final five candidates for the Mies van der Rohe Award for the best new European building of the last two will be announced by the jury on February 13th.
