City life goes underground
The new market square in Łódź is to be built over a number of levels
POLAND An underground street is to be built as part of the Nowe Centrum Łodzi project.

Work should begin in the spring. The street is to be built 6m below ground level. “This street will actually consist of two levels. A roadway for cars will be built underground and above it there will be a space with benches and trees for pedestrians,” explains Katarzyna Mikołajec, a deputy director of the city’s investment management board. The road will run between the EC1 centre and a plot purchased by Ghelamco for over PLN 85 mln. The entrance will be between the former power plant buildings and the Mbank office building. The development is also to include underground parking with access to the office buildings in the vicinity. The street will lead directly underneath the market square of NCŁ.
