POLAND One of the production halls of the former FSO car plant in Warsaw’s Żerań district has been converted into a trade and congress centre.

Brands such as Syrena, Polonez and Polski Fiat were produced in the plant, where production finally ceased in 2011. The design of the Global Expo trade fair and congress centre is the work of the Tremend studio, which decided to preserve the industrial character of the space and re-use some of the elements of the former production hall.

“Due to the budget limitations we had, we tried to use what we could find in the hall – the structure of the building, the old overhead cranes, the lamps. (...) these elements have been restored to their former glory. As a result, the hall has not only retained its special industrial character, but the project was carried out in an environmentally-friendly manner,” explains architect Magdalena Federowicz-Boule, the CEO of Tremend.

The rawness of the concrete and steel of the hall has been broken up with the use of saturated colours – with the steel structures having been painted yellow and red. The entire effect has been enhanced by a number of modern additions – benches with elaborate shapes, refurbished lighting and visible ventilation pipes. An exhibition centre is also to be built near Global Expo.
