Abrahama street for everyone

Eurobuild CEE 04 July 2019
Abrahama street for everyone
PLN 3.8 mln were finally spent on the investment
POLAND The first woonerf in Gdynia has been officially opened on ul. Abrahama. The project was initiated by residents themselves, and the execution of the project was possible due to the number of votes cast in the civil budget (almost 1,500).

The development of the urban shared zone was originally to cost around PLN 450,000, however, PLN 3.8 mln were finally spent on organising the woonerf – the authorities of Gdynia decided to transfer additional funds, which made it possible to introduce a larger number of modifications, including redevelopment of underground installations. A new, colourful pavement as well as greenery, flowerbeds and flower pots appeared on the section between ul. 10 Lutego and ul. Batorego – e.g. 24 new acacia robins, a few hundred pieces of shrubs and perennials were planted here as well as several dozen square metres of lawn. There are also new LED street lamps, bicycle stands and landscape architecture. “We have warning and directional surface texture on the pavement, and the pedestrian crossing across ul. Batorego has been marked for visually impaired people. The new benches – there are nine of them – are equipped with armrests in order to help the elderly get up. Next to each bench there is a place for a pram or walker,” remarks Marek Łucyk, a deputy mayor of Gdynia for development. “This is a trend that we want to develop in the city – transformation of many areas into shared spaces rather than just Śródmieście,” declares Wojciech Szczurek, the mayor of Gdynia. “Streets where cars can travel at a minimum speed while pedestrians and cyclists always have priority restore the right proportions in the city spaces. We like our cars but the parking space which turned into a beautiful space for pedestrians is definitely more valuable,” adds Wojciech Szczurek. The authorities are preparing another transformation – the next woonerf will be built on ul. Pawia in the Pustki Cisowskie district.
