PKP gets smart

Opr./edited AZ 05 November 2019
POLAND Polish State Railways [PKP] is to install beacons in its railway stations to communicate directly with its passengers’ smartphones using Bluetooth as part of its ‘Smart Dworzec’ project.

Such beacons are already used in shopping centres to determine users’ locations. The system was first tested in the spring at the Bydgoszcz Główna station and in October the first such devices were installed by PKP subsidiary PKP Telkol in Warszawa Centralna. The beacons will allow passengers to look at a map of the station, which includes the location of stores and service outlets, look up timetables and find out about amenities for the disabled. The system’s mobile app will even be able to offer special discounts and promotions. The new system is to complement the existing passenger information system.
