Szczecin theatre to be given London make-over
The Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre is to be redeveloped according to a design by Flanagan Lawrence

POLAND The Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre, one of the most distinctive buildings in Szczecin, is to be redeveloped and enlarged.

A tender has been announced for the first stage of the project. The work should be completed no later than 20 months from the date of the signing of the contract and bids can be submitted until January 23rd.

The amphitheatre, which is situated in Kasprowicza Park, is a venue for concerts and other events. Its history goes back to the 1930s, when the first wooden park stage was erected and rows of wooden benches were added. It was extensively rebuilt according to a design by Zbigniew Abrahamowicz in 1974, giving it its current shape with a characteristic arch inspired by the Gateway Arch in St Louis. In 2000 a new roof was added and the auditorium was extensively renovated once again.

In December 2015, an architectural competition for the reconstruction and extension of the building took place, with the winner being London-based architectural studio Flanagan Lawrence.

The work covered by the latest tender procedure includes the extension of the stage, the replacement of the roof, the reconstruction of the auditorium, and improvements to access roads to the building as well as to the electrical, sewage and sanitary infrastructure. It also includes the renovation and maintenance of the existing reinforced concrete arch.
