Nowe Czyżyny greener than most malls
Green projectsThe centre, which is owned by Newbridge, was awarded a ‘Very Good’ rating in eight criteria by the BREEAM assessors. This is the second shopping centre in Newbridge’s portfolio, following Nowe Bielawy in Toruń, to have earned such a high evaluation.
For its impact on the health and well-being of visitors it was given a score of almost 70 pct. Renovation work carried out over the last two years, including to the passageway, the creation of new leisure and play zones and the remodelling of the food court, also pushed up its overall evaluation.
Other positive factors in the eyes of the assessors were the replacement of the lighting with a more eye-friendly version as well as the introduction of live plants that act as natural air filters, which is particularly important in a city prone to smog alerts. The air conditioning system is also regularly disinfected, while a special monitoring system ensures the purity of the water.
The shopping centre also received high marks for energy management, including the introduction of energy-saving LED bulbs. Nowe Czyżyny was also positively assessed in the water consumption category due to its water supply management policy as well as water-saving renovations to the toilets.
The convenient access to public transport also contributed to the ‘Very Good’ rating – 17 bus and tram services can be used to travel to and from the centre.
The highest score, 100 pct, was awarded for the waste management. Waste has been segregated since 2016 and tenants have been provided with special bins as well as a waste segregation guide and instructions to help them understand the need for recycling.
The shopping centre also received 100 pct points in the building management category for its use of and recent improvements to the green areas that surround it. A new outdoor leisure zone has been created in front of the shopping centre and 60 flower pots placed around the building, including bee- and bird-friendly plants. Newbridge has also given special instructions to construction companies related to the protection of the existing natural environment. The next few years are to be marked by further work on making the shopping centre even more eco-friendly.
“The installation of LED roof lighting, with the addition of further water and energy saving devices to the toilets as well as the replacement of the skylights to provide more daylight and reduce the energy consumption, still lie ahead of us. Furthermore, we also plan to introduce a system that monitors the energy consumption as well as replace the ventilation system with a less energy consuming version,”' reveals Elwira Pyrkowska, the asset manager at Newbridge Poland.
