Investors sharpen appetite for risk

Opr./edited AKL 13 February 2020

WORLD According to the Investment Intentions Survey 2020, which has been published by INREV, ANREV and PREA, global institutional investors have been exhibiting a greater appetite for risk since the beginning of the year.

Around 20 pct of the global investors investing capital in Europe – including most European ones – stated that opportunistic investment was their current preferred investment style. This is the highest figure for this sentiment since 2009 and has more than doubled since last year, when 9.8 pct of those surveyed expressed that view.

The figure reflects investors’ eagerness to seek out alternative ways of employing their capital and generating profits in persistently period of persisting low interest rates and low yields. It also represents a continuing trend, with investors designating on average more than 12 pct of the total value of assets under management for opportunistic strategies in 2019 – almost 50 pct more than for the previous year.

The survey indicates that at least EUR 98.1 bln of the new capital is expected to be invested in real estate in 2020. A significant proportion of this (61 pct) will come from investors in Europe, and almost 20 pct from North America and the Asia-Pacific region. European players are expected to increase their annual investment volume from EUR 32.5 bln in 2019 to estimated EUR 54.1 bln over the next two years. Europe is expected to attract significant amounts of capital over this period – EUR 39.8 bln, compared to EUR 28.3 bln for the Asia-Pacific region and EUR 19.4 bln for North America.
