Better February for small shops

Better February for small shops
Small-format stores enjoyed an 11.2 pct increase in turnover in February

POLAND The Polish Chamber of Commerce [PIH] has announced that this year’s turnover for small-format stores increased by 11.2 pct in February y-o-y and the total number of transactions went up by 3 pct.

In the last week of February, the effects of stocking up in anticipation of the pandemic were already evident.

According to criteria of the PIH, small-format stores (with a maximum area of 300 sqm), include: small groceries of up to 40 sqm, medium food stores from 41 sqm to 100 sqm, large food stores of between 101 sqm and 300 sqm, and stores that specialise in selling alcohol.

According to the chamber, the large year-on-year increase is largely due to the leap year – and the extra day in February this year was a Saturday, when customers usually buy more than on regular days. In addition to that, stocking up on food and hygiene products took off in the last week of February, when the sales value of soaps and liquid soaps in small-format stores was 60 pct higher than a week earlier, while similar increases were also recorded for cereals, pulses, rice, pasta and tinned goods.

According to the PIH and CMR Panel, in February 2020 the average value of transactions in small-format stores was PLN 16.18 or 7.6 pct more than a year ago, while the average number of shopping basket item remained more or less constant, thus higher prices are mainly responsible for the increase in sales revenues.
