Government plans to build mega-airport
Planning and preparation work should be completed at the end of 2019

POLAND The government has given its official approval to a document entitled ‘The Preparation Concept To Construct Port Solidarność – The Central Transport Port for the Republic of Poland’.

The estimated cost of building the new airport is PLN 30-35 bln, which includes both new road and rail links. The most likely location for the project is a 3 ha plot in the village of Stanisławów near Grodzisk Mazowiecki, which is lies between Łódź and Warsaw. The airport is intended to take over the civilian traffic from Warsaw Chopin Airport and become one of the largest transfer hubs in Europe. On completion of the first stage, the airport will have a capacity of up to 45 mln passengers per year, which should eventually more than double to over 100 mln. Planning and preparation work should be completed at the end of 2019 with the construction work to take a further 8 years and the opening planned for 2027. The airport is to be directly linked to the A2 motorway as well as Warsaw’s planned motorway ring road (which was approved as part of the country’s development concept for 2030). It should eventually be possible to travel from any major Polish city (with the exception of Szczecin, which is to be served more by it local airport) to the new airport within 2.5 hours.

The decision also includes the approval for the development of a new town near Port Solidarność, which might include business parks, and a large exhibition centre for Central Europe. The council of ministers and the President’s office have announced that the project will require long-term funding from the state budget and new laws will have to be passed to streamline the planning procedures.
