Merko to start laying undersea cables

ESTONIA Elering has appointed Merko Infra, part of Merko Ehitus group, and Connecto Eesti to lay new electric power cables between the mainland of Estonia and the island of Muhu and between Muhu and the island of Saaremaa.

The first contract worth EUR 9 mln plus VAT is for a 110 kV electric power cable to be laid across the Suur Väin strait to Muhu, with two old 35 kV sea cables to be dismantled. Merko is the leader of the consortium for this stage of the project with a 51 pct stake.

Across the Väike Väin strait between Muhu and Saaremaa, a 110 kV cable is to be laid. For this particular contract, worth EUR 5.4 mln, Connecto Eesti is the leader with a 51 pct stake.

All the work is to be completed by December 2020.
