POLAND A consortium made up of Energopol Szczecin and PBDiM Mińsk Mazowiecki has ordered two TBM shields for the excavation of the cross-city rail tunnel in Łódź.

The permit for the construction work, which was applied for in October 2018, is expected to be issued at any moment. EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) type shields with different cross-sections manufactured by Herrenknecht are to be used.

“We are at the design stage for the shields; these devices will be designed to cope with the specificity and ground conditions of the project,” explains Dymitr Petrow-Ganew, the CEE sales director of Herrenknecht. “The EPB type shields are designed for compact and mixed soils, and the advantage of their design is the method of discharging spoil from the mining chamber to the initial chamber by a screw conveyor in the head and then via a conveyor belt,” he adds.

In December 2017, the Polish State Railways (PKP PLK) awarded a contract worth PLN 1.59 bln for the design and construction of the tunnel as well as two underground stations. A total of app. 7.5 km of tunnels are to be built in the project, including a 3 km long dual-line tunnel and four single-line tunnels with a total length of app. 4.5 km. The maximum depth (around 22m) will be reached in the area of the station on ul. Ogrodowa.

The project in Łódź requires shields with different cross-sections: the first of these, with a diameter of more than 13m and a machine length of 80m, is to excavate the dual-line tunnel, while a smaller device, with a diameter of 8.7m and a length of 106m, will be used for the single-line tunnels. The shield with the larger diameter will be driven by electric engines and the smaller shield by hydraulic engines.

Herrenknecht previously provided four EPB type shields for the construction of the central section of the second metro line in Warsaw. These devices are also to be used for the excavation of subsequent sections of this route.
