Europe hotel construction up 48.6 pct

EUROPE A total of 1,454 hotel projects were in the pipeline across Europe comprising 187,198 rooms in construction as of April this year, according to data from STR. This represents a 48.6 pct y-o-y increase in the number of rooms under development.

Around 57,274 rooms were in uncategorised projects (up 119.9 pct y-o-y) with 40,477 rooms (up 34 pct) in the upscale segment, and 31,127 in the midscale (up 16.1 pct).

Five countries had more than 7,000 rooms under construction: Germany led with 49,901 rooms, representing 7.6 pct of the country’s existing supply, after which came the UK (42,278 rooms, 6.3 pct of existing supply) followed by Spain, France and Turkey.
