PLN 35 mln for Kraków photo museum
The usable area of the former armoury is to increase from 1,500 sqm to 3,300 sqm

POLAND Construction work has begun on the new home of the Museum of Photography in Kraków. The museum is to be housed in the former armoury building at ul. Rakowicka 22.

The institution has received a total of more than PLN 35.4 mln from the Kraków Regional Authority (PLN 27.8 mln) and in EU funds from the Regional Operational Programme of the Małopolska Region for 2014–2020 (PLN 7.6 mln).

The building will comprise modern exhibition and educational space as well as a library with a reading room. It will also have a bookstore and a café. The usable area of the building will increase from 1,500 sqm to 3,300 sqm.

The architectural concept is the work of Marek Pabich of the Lachman Pabich Architekci studio. The building permit application and detailed design was prepared by Zespół Projektowy Kontrapunkt, architect Ewa Dobrucka. RE-Bau is the general contractor.

The opening of the museum has been scheduled for H1 2021. In June 2020, the museum plans to complete work on its current home at ul. Józefitów 16. In the course of the work, its exhibition is available for viewing at the historic Projekt Strzelnica [Shooting Range] building at ul. Królowej Jadwigi 220 in the city’s Wola Justowska district.

“The modernisation of the Museum of Photography is the latest Kraków project that is important not only for the city itself but for Polish culture as a whole. It is, after all, a unique building with unique potential. Many museums have individual departments or collections of photographs, but only the Kraków museum has entirely devoted itself to this field of our heritage. No other Polish museum has such achievements in the field of photography – and hence has such development opportunities. With the investment activities we have launched, these opportunities will be fully exploited,” explained Jacek Majchrowski, the Mayor of Kraków.
